Of course, Maria Grazia Chiuri, the first female artistic director to take the helm at Christian Dior is leading a new powerful moment. The Dior Lady Art project, which invites artists to exclusively custom-design the coveted Lady Dior handbag, has carefully selected an all-female collective of eleven artists.
Chiuri poignantly noted her debut collection of Spring 2017 with a literary nod to Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her essay, titled ‘We Should All Be Feminist,’ which Chiuri emblazoned on a t-shirt. For Spring 2018, the first outfit to hit the runway, styled with a striped t-shirt read, ‘Why have there been no great women artists? But the question is not why but where? So as the old adage reflects, ‘third time is truly a charm’, Chiuri follows up with an answer to that very question with a coterie of female artists that enamour the contemporary art market.
The Dior Lady Art project capsule collection set to roll out in stores January 2019 will include designs by Olga de Amaral, Polly Apfelbaum, Burçak Bingöl, Lee Bul, Isabelle Cornaro, Haruka Kojin, Li Shurui, Mickalene Thomas, Janaina Tschãpe, Morgane Tschiember and Pae White.
What do these artists have in common? A narrative—an influential voice that carries a conversation through their art and medium either by questioning society, cultural change, diversity, career longevity, youth, age, gender—creative dialogue that addresses this cultural moment in time.
Apropos, the Dior Lady Art project launch of these beautiful little-quilted totes originally created in 1994, will commence during Art Basel Miami at the Dior boutique, with prices starting at $5,000. As to which delectable diva of Dior I would select, well, I’m currently coveting green, so the Lee Bul design is divine, and Morgane Tschiember literally, crushes it!
